The Susie B Quilt

Need a an easy, classic quilt pattern to make for yourself or as a gift? I’ve got you covered! This is one quilt pattern you’ll want to make again and again.

Susie B was designed by Penelope Handmade and has been on my to-make list for some time now. So, imagine my surprise when my non-quilty friend, Meghan, brought me this pattern and asked me to make it for her!

Picking Out Fabrics

One of the best parts of making this quilt for Meghan was that she knew EXACTLY what she wanted it to look like! She came to me having already purchased the pattern and the backing fabric. She also knew that she wanted the quilt top to be black and cream.

How’s that for easy?!

Thanks to Jennifer at Penelope Handmade for sharing a variety of versions of her quilt design to help people visualize all the ways the pattern can come together!

You can never go wrong with a Rifle Paper Co floral as a quilt back paired with the classic, never-goes-out-of-style black and cream colors! We took a quick look through my Art Gallery Pure Solids swatch cards to find the perfect colors…Caviar and White Linen. The final step was finding this unknown stripe in my stash.

I knew I had been collecting stripes for a reason!

Making and Gifting

I have to give a special shout out to Meghan for her patience in waiting for me to make this quilt!

It certainly isn’t hard to make, but I utilized the power of 15 minutes to get this one done alongside all the other projects. I made it in stages; 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there, and it before I knew it, I had a quilt top.

Seriously, this quilt pattern couldn’t be easier to make! If you can make half square triangles, then you can make this quilt!

With an upcoming trip to Ft. Worth, where I’d be seeing Meghan, I wanted to get the quilt finished so I could deliver it to her in person. Is there anything better than seeing the smiles of our loved ones when we hand them their quilt?! I think not!

To keep things simple I decided to finish the quilt with straight line quilting. A simple quilt design sometimes calls for simple quilting.

Then the best part! GIFTING!

Our Ft. Worth weekend was so much fun! I love that we found this amazing mural by Mariell Guzman to pose in front of!

I love how happy Meghan was with her quilt. And I have to say, now I kind of want that same version for myself, too! I also think this would be a fun pattern to make in red, white, and blue for a Fourth of July quilt.

You can find the Susie B quilt pattern in the shop at Penelope Handmade. I highly recommend not only this pattern, but all her patterns! They’re so well written and so fun to make!

I have LOTS of Penelope Handmade quilts for you to see on my Instagram feed. Make sure you’re following me there @JenLevin and have a scroll through my posts!

Happy Sewing!

Jen
