It’s a big decision to take a hobby you love so much to the next level and make it a business. And much like naming a child, choosing a name for a business is a process.
I’m thrilled to have chosen one that has so much meaning for me, and I hope YOU, too!
Let’s get to it…
At the very heart of it all, we are QUILTERS, and 98% of the time, we quilt with cotton. Basically, every quilt we make is gathered cotton. See what I did there?
And so many of us have a SECOND hobby of collecting fabric. (Can you relate?) We gather cotton to add to our stash. It’s what we do, and we do it well.
We are a COMMUNITY. We gather together to talk about quilting, learn from one another, and to sit and stitch. For me, that’s the most important part...the gathering together around our craft.
And the most personal reason for the name…
My maternal grandparents used to do seasonal work picking fruits and vegetables, finding work where they could. They lived in Missouri, but my mother and aunt were born in California because my grandparents were there for the season.
Not only did they pick fruits and veggies, they also picked COTTON. They gathered cotton.
Quilting connects me to my roots.
It makes me feel connected to the people in my family that came before me. My parents and grandparents were creative people who made do. I don’t specifically remember my grandmothers or mother making quilts, but we had quilts in our home that came from somewhere.
I do remember my mother sewing clothes when I was little, and now she also makes quilts and other small sewing projects. She’s also AMAZING in the kitchen. My father can build anything or fix anything. He’s always tinkering with something.
My whole life has been full of makers...making (or fixing) something with our hands that didn’t exist before.
Quilt making is that for me. I am continuing in the line of makers and I couldn’t be more proud and excited.
I do hope you feel more connected to Gathered Cotton after hearing what’s behind the name.
Gathered Cotton exists for YOU…to celebrate your creativity, community, and your passion for quilting.
